Where some see blight in the city’s neighborhoods,
Cleveland Habitat sees diamonds in the rough. And that’s an
understatement in reference to its latest rehab project on Clement
Avenue in Slavic Village.
The three bedroom, one
bathroom house built in 1918 has been fully rehabbed and will be
dedicated to its new homeowner on Saturday. Over the last several months
Habitat staff, volunteers and partner family have worked hard on
upgrading the home including new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, windows,
roof, siding, appliances and paint.
“Habitat learned how
to do rehabs in Slavic Village,” said John Habat, executive director
for Cleveland Habitat. “In a sense, we cut our teeth there as this was
the first neighborhood revitalization project we undertook.” Habat
noted that, “all along, Habitat has had the enthusiastic support of
Cleveland City Councilman Tony Brancatelli, in whose ward Clement Avenue
is located.
“Cleveland City Council is proud to be one
of the sponsors of this home,” said Ward 12 City Councilman Tony
Brancatelli. “Habitat for Humanity's vision to target resources and
provide high-quality restored homes is truly commendable.”
This
is the fourth house Habitat has rehabbed on Clement Avenue and reflects
its goal of helping build a community of homeowners and stakeholders
who have a vested interest in their homes and streets.
Cleveland
Habitat’s zero-interest mortgages enable families to quickly build
financial security through growing equity in their homes. Most families
are able to pay off their mortgages in 10-15 years.
